Tips for good life

Cut your cholesterol nearly in half—with avocado?

Yes, according to scientific studies, the Wilen Sisters' "avocado cure" really could lower your cholesterol up to 42%. It turns out avocados are positively packed with heart-healthy omega-9 fatty acids— and they're rich in a compound called beta-sitosterol, which has been shown to lower cholesterol in 16 different studies!

Heart attack?

Don't just call 911 and chew an aspirin! While you're waiting for help to arrive, squeeze the pinky on your left hand HARD! This accupressure procedure has been said to save lives.

Dissolve kidney stones...
WITH ASPARAGUS?!
Perhaps you've noticed that urine smells, um, different after eating asparagus? Maybe your kidneys are trying to tell you something. In fact, asparagus has been a documented kidney stone remedy for at least 160 years.

No such thing as "deleted" on the Internet

It's always fun to write about research that you can actually try out for yourself.

Try this: Take a photo and upload it to Facebook, then after a day or so, note what the URL to the picture is (the actual photo, not the page on which the photo resides), and then delete it. Come back a month later and see if the link works. Chances are: It will.

Facebook isn't alone here. Researchers at Cambridge University (so you know this is legit, people!) have found that nearly half of the social networking sites don't immediately delete pictures when a user requests they be removed. In general, photo-centric websites like Flickr were found to be better at quickly removing deleted photos upon request.
Why do "deleted" photos stick around so long? The problem relates to the way data is stored on large websites: While your personal computer only keeps one copy of a file, large-scale services like Facebook rely on what are called content delivery networks to manage data and distribution.

It's a complex system wherein data is copied to multiple intermediate devices, usually to speed up access to files when millions of people are trying to access the service simultaneously. (Yahoo! Tech is served by dozens of servers, for example.)

But because changes aren't reflected across the CDN immediately, ghost copies of files tend to linger for days or weeks.
In the case of Facebook, the company says data may hang around until the URL in question is reused, which is usually "after a short period of time." Though obviously that time can vary considerably.
Of course, once a photo escapes from the walled garden of a social network like Facebook, the chances of deleting it permanently fall even further.

Google's caching system is remarkably efficient at archiving copies of web content, long after it's removed from the web. Anyone who's ever used Google Image Search can likely tell you a story about clicking on a thumbnail image, only to find that the image has been deleted from the website in question -- yet the thumbnail remains on Google for months. And then there are services like the Wayback Machine, which copy entire websites for posterity, archiving data and pictures forever.
The lesson: Those drunken party photos you don't want people to see? Simply don't upload them to the web, ever, because trying to delete them after you sober up is a tough proposition.

Chẳng may trả nợ kiếp người
Tai qua nạn khỏi ở hiền gặp may.
Thế nên phải hiểu thời nay

Invisible Tree House

It is an old architectural trick used since the invention of mirrored glass: covering buildings with the reflective material and declaring that they blend in with the surroundings. Most architects use it to convince wary citizens that it is OK if their building is tall because it will reflect the sky and nature. The rendering always makes the building disappear, and the reality is always a big clunky mirrored box.
But a mirrored box can be elegant, too, such as this treehouse by Swedish firm Tham & Videgard Hansson Arkitekter. TreeHugger loves treehouses when they are designed to minimize impact on the surrounding landscape. And in this case, it looks like the architects have pulled it off successfully.

Thơ vui!!

Thơ Tú Xương
Một trà, một rượu, một đàn bà,
Ba thứ lăng nhăng nó quấy ta,
Chừa được thứ nào hay thứ ấy…
Có chăng chừa rượu với chừa trà!

Thơ Tú Thịt

Cái nhà cái cửa cái ông chồng,
Ba thứ lăng nhăng thiệt mất công.
Nếu phải bỏ gì trong mấy thứ,
Bỏ nhà bỏ cửa, giữ ông chồng.

A rire!

- Chéri...Ce paysage me laisse sans voix ! - Parfait, nous campons ici ! ·

Giving Up Wine

The homeless woman

I was walking down the street when I was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless woman who asked me for a couple of dollars for dinner.

I took out my wallet, got out ten dollars and asked, 'If I give you this money, will you buy wine with it instead of dinner?''No, I had to stop drinking years ago', the homeless woman told me.'Will you use it to go shopping instead of buying food?'

I asked.'No, I don't waste time shopping,' the homeless woman said. 'I need to spend all my time trying to stay alive.''Will you spend this on a beauty salon instead of food?' I asked.'Are you NUTS!' replied the homeless woman.

I haven't had my hair done in 20 years!''Well, I said, 'I'm not going to give you the money. Instead, I'm going to take you out for dinner with my husband and me tonight.'

The homeless Woman was shocked. 'Won't your husband be furious with you for doing that? I know I'm dirty, and I probably smell pretty disgusting.'I said, 'That's okay. It's important for him to see what a woman looks like after she has given up shopping, hair appointments, and wine.'
I just know you're laughing!

A joke!

A man feared his wife wasn't hearing as well as she used to and he thought she might need a hearing aid.
Not quite sure how to approach her,he called the family Doctor to discuss the problem.
The Doctor told him there is a simple informal test the husband could perform to give the Doctor a better idea about her hearingloss
Here's what you do," said the Doctor, "stand about 40 feet away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you.
If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get aresponse."
That evening, the wife is in the kitchen cooking dinner and he was in the den
He says to himself, "I'm about 40 feet away, let's see what happens"
Then in a normal tone he asks, 'Honey, what's for dinner?" No response.
So the husband moves closer to the kitchen, about 30 feet from his wife and repeats, "Honey, what's for dinner?"
Still no response.
Next he moves into the dining room where he is about 20 feet fromhis wife and asks,
"Honey, what's for dinner?"
Again he gets no response.
So, he walks up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet away.
"Honey, what's for dinner?" Again there is no response.
So he walks right up behind her. "Honey, what's for dinner?"

Luckily the wife responded:"Ralph, for the FIFTH time, CHICKEN!"

Beef Stroganoff with Portobello Mushrooms

Beef Stroganoff with Portobello Mushrooms

Ingredients:
1. 2 teaspoons canola oil
2. 1 pound flank steak, trimmed
3. 1 tablespoon canola oil
4. 4 large portobello mushrooms, stemmed, halved and thinly sliced
5. 1 large onion, sliced
6. 3/4 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
7. 1/2 teaspoon salt
8. 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
9. 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
10. 1 (14.25 ounce) can reduced-sodium beef broth
11. 2 tablespoons cognac or brandy
12. 1 tablespoon red-wine vinegar
13. 1/2 cup reduced-fat sour cream
14. 4 tablespoons chopped fresh chives or parsley, divided
COOKING:
15. Heat 2 teaspoons oil in a large skillet over high heat until shimmering but not smoking. Add steak and cook until browned on both sides, 3 to 4 minutes per side. (The meat will be rare, but will continue to cook as it rests.) Transfer to a cutting board and let rest for 5 minutes. Cut lengthwise into 2 long pieces then crosswise, across the grain, into 1/4-inch-thick slices.
16. Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon oil in the skillet over medium heat. Add mushrooms, onion, thyme, salt and pepper and cook, stirring often, until the vegetables are very tender and lightly browned, 8 to 12 minutes. Sprinkle flour over the vegetables; stir to coat. Stir in broth, cognac (or brandy) and vinegar and bring to a boil, stirring often. Reduce heat to a simmer, and continue cooking, stirring often, until the mixture is thickened, about 3 minutes. Stir in sour cream, chives (or parsley), the sliced steak and any accumulated juices. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring, until heated through, 1 to 2 minutes more.
Yield: 4 servings
