5 tips for keeping your sponges clean

We use our sponges very regularly to clean all kinds of surfaces. But how do you disinfect them after using them and keep them properly? We give you 5 unstoppable and terribly effective tips.

How to keep clean sponges after cleaning? This is a question that many are asking. Many solutions exist, we have selected 5 that will be accessible to all. So, before you throw away your dirty sponges, read this article.

1. Place your sponge in your microwave

According to a study carried out by a team of researchers from the University of Florida, in the United States, it would suffice to put your sponge in the microwave for two minutes for it to be perfectly clean, free from all the bacteria accumulated during cleaning . But be careful, for this method to be effective, the sponge must be soaked with water. The heat emitted by the agitation of water molecules in the microwave will have a devastating effect on viruses , parasites and other genes present on the sponge. You should also check that your sponge does not contain any metallic material . Otherwise you risk causing electric shocks to shoot out in the form of large sparks. To be sure you're not taking a risk, look at the composition of your sponge on its packaging. Finally, it should be noted that after spending 2 minutes heating, the sponge will be hot. Carefully remove it and run it under cold water before putting it away.

2. Use white vinegar

The vinegar white is an indispensable product in a house. It does not smell very good, but it is extremely useful. For cleaning sponges, it is very effective. Place your sponge in a bowl filled with water and vinegar . Let stand for a good hour and put it away. The bacteria will be gone.  You can also fill your sink with lukewarm water. Add a cup of white vinegar and the same amount of baking soda (another essential product in the house) and mix. Let your sponge soak in the sink for 2 to 3 hours. You just need to rinse it, wring it out and put it away.

3. Use squeezed lemon juice

If we had to advise you just one tip, this would be the best. It is economical and ecological. To thoroughly degrease your sponge, immerse it in boiling water with lemon juice . This will loosen all the grease residues.

To disinfect it, squeeze two lemon juices in a bowl and let soak for a good hour. Lemon has many virtues, including that of destroying bacteria. The advantage of this technique is the good smell of lemon compared to that of white vinegar. What to avoid is cleaning with bleach. It is effective, but it can end up deteriorating the sponges.

4. Put your sponge in the dishwasher

This method sounds simple, yet many studies have shown it to be very effective against bacteria. Place your sponge in the cutlery tray and run a whole cycle with rinsing . On the other hand, it is necessary to choose a fairly hot cycle, that is to say above 50 ° C. Once the machine has stopped, you will get a very clean sponge.

5. Remember to store your sponges properly

Knowing how to clean your sponges is one thing, but you also have to know how to use them well. First of all, it should be noted that sponges should not be stored under the sink, as the humidity in this cupboard is conducive to the development of mold . In addition, each sponge has its use: one for cleaning the kitchen, one for the dishes, one for the bathroom and one for the toilet. Finally, a sponge should be wrung out well after each use.It should then be placed in a dry place. The rim of a sink is clearly not the ideal place. Finally, know that drying in the sun is the best way to keep sponges clean.
